I bought these at the Vintage Fashion Expo this weekend.

After wearing my last glasses for 10 years, it feels nice to move onto something new.
I need to get an eye exam next weekend. Just like my old glasses, I haven't had an eye exam in 10 years. Yikes.

Trying to find the perfect Super-8 film projector on eBay.
I want something that plays sound and has the option to play film in different speeds.

As soon as I find something suitable, I can start inviting people over to my place for a Cross Country Road Trip Super-8 Footage Viewing Party! Thirty minutes (8 reels) of footage from the trip we took this summer and I can't wait to share it with everybody in my dark living room! I'm bursting!

So you're looking at the very first Art Los Angeles Contemporary advertisement that came out September 10th in Artillery Magazine. Out of the 6 years that I've worked in the fair business, this ad made me the most proud out of any other ad for any other event. I was just gleaming.

I've been in a few "working from the ground up" kind of companies, but this one feels good. Lets hope everything goes smoothly in the planning of the fair. There is definitely so much to do!

Two Sundays ago (September 20th) Yvonne, Brian, Ola, Mabern, John and I went to Long Beach and spent the day wandering about 4th Street, exploring antique and book stores and drinking coffee drinks. It was a nice, relaxing day and a few of us (including myself) realized that we have never been to Long Beach during the day time!

In the evening we went on a twilight historical tour of the Queen Mary. Man oh man, I love historical tours! And let me tell you, the $12 ticket was worth every dollar! What an amazing art deco ship! It really just took my breath away.

When the tour was over, we wandered around the Queen Mary. We stumbled upon the radio room of the steam ship, which made me immediately happy! When doing family tree research, I learned that my Grandfather was a radiographer on many steam ships. He would have sat in a room much like the one (just a little less modern of course) we found on the Queen Mary! I had Yvonne snap a photo of me in front of the radio room, just for fun.

I've had this journal since October 25, 2001. Pretty intense huh?
Well, despite my very non-frequent posts, I really have no desire to let go of this thing. There is way too much history here. Embarrassing, amazing, whatever it is, it's good and I want to hold on to it for as long as I can.

Did I mention that I have a time capsule that I get to open up January 1, 2010. Yes, I created a time capsule 10 years ago. I remember here and there little things that I put inside of it, but mostly, I hope I get rocked my socks off and my mind gets blown. In reality, it might just be a little silly and not that impressive, but we'll see. I will definitely report. I know for sure that 16-year-old-Gina wrote a letter to 26-year-old-Gina, so I bet hilarity will be involved. Maybe I'll video tape the whole thing? We'll see how brave I can be.

It's all about laughing at yourself... right?

Hey, psst, come over here!

For the last couple months I've been working on this website project for a friend of mine.

My friend's name is Mike Cuenca, and the website I've been building is www.obliviontheseries.com, for his web series called Oblivion.

Mike is a talented film maker, and he's gone and created, written, directed AND edited this project. And the "web ratings" have been ridiculous and people are really diggin' the show!

Episode 1 has just been added to the website and Episode 2 is coming in October.
I highly suggest you watch the first episode below, and peruse the website, www.obliviontheseries.com. There's a lot of great content, and we're developing more to be unveiled within the next week! It's really a fun show to watch!

So click the play button below, and tell your friends!

I just bought this macramé wall hanging on eBay. It's 30" in diameter.
I paid way too much for shipping, but lets not focus on that now.
This will go over our couch, which is the same blue (hopefully the photo was not off too much in color).

I finished Gustave Flaubert's Madame Bovary this afternoon and I just loved it! I've been quite pleased with all the books I've been reading lately. Shane called me a book worm the other night, which I guess is kind of refreshing. Now I'm on to Bram Stoker's Dracula...

We got into Los Angeles around 6:00 am this morning.
Feeling a little overwhelmed and tired, but it's okay.

I've got three projects to jump into and complete:

1. Finish the Oblivion: The Series website for a friend, which I started before I went on the road trip.

2. Get started on Patterson Beckwith's photography book, to be published by LACMA. He needs to me to update the initial design we started a year or so ago, and work out all the production details with LACMA and the printers.

3. Finish my 2.5 year in the making photography book, as soon as possible, because... 2.5 years in the making is pathetic.

HERE WE GO GUYS.
Follow through time.

I bought this Super-8 camera the other day off eBay.
It came in the mail today, which was exceptionally fast!

It's the Bolex 155 MACROZOOM Super 8mm Camera (1968).
It's in great condition, and after I buy the light meter batteries tomorrow, I can test it out a little better.

I thought it would be cool to bring along a Super-8 camera on our cross country road trip.
I'm nervous about the whole thing because I want really badly for it to be successful.
I'm not being picky, I'm not looking for perfect footage. I just want to have some kind of Super-8 document.

In a perfect world, after I get the Super-8 film developed, I'll invite a bunch of people over, and I'll play the reels that I took on a projector (I have yet to buy). I know that's kind of a lot to ask. But I want it so badly and I admit it's stressing me out a bit.

Matilija Falls - May 22-24, 2009

Again, Jeff sent us on our way for a Memorial Day weekend camping trip. Matilija Falls was beautiful and the hike to the camp site, swimming holes, hot springs and waterfalls was just what the doctor ordered. I broke my 35mm camera as I was crossing the creek, but managed to shoot 5 rolls of film before the mishap. I haven't got those rolls developed yet, but hope to soon.

These photos were taken by Tim and myself with his digital camera. Just a taste of the beautiful sites!

I finished reading this, this afternoon. I found it quite enjoyable, but I always find Tom Robbins' books to be enjoyable to read.

So, one book read out of the twelve I said I would read this year. I need to catch up! I was thinking I would read a book a month, but I'm obviously behind with it already being late April.

Next I'm reading Truman Capote's In Cold Blood. It's been a while since I read a good true crime book. I just eat that stuff up. Thanks to Mabern for lending me a huge pile of books!

Just got off the phone with the lady that works at the Warren County Courthouse, and she was not a very nice person. She could really care less about some person's grandfather's birth certificate from the 1900's. I asked her for some insight as to why there wouldn't be a record, and she wasn't having it. "Insight? Please!"

Anyway, I did get her to tell me that there is a large room with all the records that are available to the public. So, looks like I'm going to be wrestlin' around some records in Pennsylvania this upcoming June. It's ok. I like doing this kind of research. And I can bring my research binder with me and see if I can fish out any other information, since it seems like Warren County, Pennsylvania is where the family nested for a while.

But I'm going to get my great grandparent's death certificates from the Los Angeles Recorder's office tomorrow! On Friday I discovered that they died in Los Angeles, which I think is neat 'cause I had no idea they even had ties to Los Angeles! I wonder why they moved from Warren, Pennsylvania to Los Angeles, California...

So I got my self addressed envelope sent back to me today. For some reason, the birth certificate record was not found, which is very peculiar. I went through the records I've been collecting to double check to see if for some reason I had it wrong and my grandfather on my father's side was not born in Warren, Pennsylvania on May 17, 1900. But, no, I got it right. I have various records that all point to those facts. I called and left a voice message for the vital records lady at the Warren County Courthouse, but not return call from her. Maybe she took off early for Good Friday or something? I'm going to have to call her early on Monday and ask her some follow up questions. Maybe there is no official birth certificate? Because it was so long ago? I don't know how consistent they were with record keeping in Pennsylvania in those days. Or maybe she just didn't look hard enough in the archive of records?? I don't know, but I'm going to follow up with her anyway.

Worst case scenario, while Shane and I are in Bolivar, New York this late June, I could take a day and drive to the Warren County Courthouse myself! It's about 1 hour and 45 minutes away, and I think Shane's family would understand. When else would I have the opportunity to get very old genealogy information first hand from the east coast!

I'm exhausted right now and I think I'm going to take a shower and catch a few zzz's before heading out tonight. Melissa and I are putting the finishing touches on our Kern River camping trip photo book tonight. I'll be very happy when we send it off to Blurb! Documentation photos will definitely follow.

I'm really excited because I bought my airplane ticket this morning.
I'm going with The Tartans on their east coast tour from May 8th to May 18th. They have shows in NYC during the Popfest, and also in New Haven, Boston and Washington DC. I'm so so excited.

And on top of that, we're planning a separate cross country road trip for sometime in late June to mid July. On our way back from Bolivar, New York I'm going to see if I can visit my old buddy from high school who's studying in Kansas. It's going to be me, Shane, Tim and Lefty. Tim wants to go to Chicago and watch a Cubs game at Wrigley Field. And we're going to do some camping too! I can just imagine now looking back at the backseat and seeing Lefty with his head hanging out the window.

It's going to be great. I can't wait to take photographs of everything. Maybe I'll make a photo book from the experience. Who knows. I have to take my medium format camera in to get some maintenance done. I've been meaning to take it in for over a year, and I'm finally going to do it!

I love all this planning. What to bring, money to save, routes to map! This is exactly what I want to be doing right now.

I have a lot to look forward to. I should remind myself that sometimes.

So today I called the Warren County Courthouse of Pennsylvania, in search for my Grandfather's birth certificate. The woman I was supposed to talk to wasn't at her desk, so I left her a voice message. Usually you can order a copy of the certificate online, but since this birth certificate is prior to 1906, I have to talk to someone at the courthouse about it. I hope she calls me back soon. If not, I'll just have to call her again tomorrow.

I'm feeling good right now because I'm making progress with the genealogy research I'm doing. It's very small progress that hasn't gone too far back into into the family tree, but it's satisfying regardless. I found the house I lived in as a baby in San Pedro, before moving to Orange County to the house I remember as "the house I grew up in". It's crazy, I did a Google Maps street view of the house, and I totally recognized it! WHAM! It just slapped me in the face. I remember standing on that front porch, and I have a photo of me standing there too! It's crazy. I just got to see the house over the internet, like it was no thing.

See what I mean:

See how the windows are the same in both images? And the address is right too, look at the address on the curb on the Google Maps street view and then look at the bottom half of the address on my old photo.

Hey, the lady from the Warren County Courthouse just called! All I have to do is send them a $5 search fee, along with a self addressed envelope. I love this, this is really fun for me. I feel like I'm slowly crackin' a case. I love it.

This is my grandfather on my mother's side.
He was born January 1st, 1900.
His name was Francisco Lee, but you can see by looking at him that he was 100% Chinese, and I doubt his first, first name was Francisco.

You see, my grandfather was born in China. Every since I was a girl I was told the story about how he got on a boat leaving China to San Francisco. He was 14 years old and he needed to go to San Francisco to make money and send it back to China to help support his two younger siblings. When the boat stopped in Havana, Cuba, he wasn't sure what was going on. When he asked about the San Francisco stop, he was told that they had stopped there a while ago and he had missed it. So, instead of going back to China, he got off in Havana. Thankfully, there was a large Chinese community in Havana, and he ended up working and eventually buying his own general store.

I never got to meet him. He died in Havana in the mid seventies. It's going to be tricky to track down information from this side of the family.

This is my grandmother on my mother's side.
Her name was Teresa. In her family, everyone had a nickname. Her nickname was "Tete", and that is what I called her when I was a child.

Tete is 11 years old in this photograph. It was taken in Havana, Cuba in 1933.
I have never seen this photograph before, so I had a heart attack when my mother showed it to me last Friday. I only remember my grandmother as young as a 60 year old woman, so it was amazing to have a different view of her. I think she's beautiful.

You can not understand the sense of family pride that I am experiencing right now. As a child, I never really had much information about my family history and can only remember fragments of things that my parents said in passing. I started working on my genealogy last year and the whole process has been so gratifying.

I have some more photos that my mother has scanned. Some of these photos just blow me away. I have never seen a photo of my deceased grandmother at 11 years old. I don't know why she has never shown these to me before. I'll post these next.

I made a Flickr set for just these photos too.
